What does BTL Lab Testing Cost? 

• The BTL Lab’s base testing rate is $150/hour USD for laboratory testing and consultation. BACnet International Corporate Members (Platinum, Gold, and Silver) in good financial standing will receive a 50% discount, making their effective rate $75/hour USD. An estimate of the testing hours required will be provided to the manufacturer upon review of the application.

How do I receive a quotation for BTL Testing? 

As per the BTL Lab Testing Policy, the BTL Lab provides estimates based on functionality found on the BTL Lab Functionality Checklist. Email testing@bacnetinternational.org with your BTL Functionality Checklist to request an estimate.

What assumptions are the estimates based on? 

• The estimate is specific to one of the three test categories available under the BTL Testing Policies (Full Test, Retest of a Prior Test Case, or Certificate Renewal).

• The estimate relies on the information provided in your BTL Functionality Checklist. Any inconsistencies between the checklist and the actual device may significantly increase the cost.

• This estimate is for testing one model. If additional models are submitted concurrently using the same BACnet stack, and each model has a subset of the claimed BACnet capabilities, the estimate will be increased accordingly.

• This estimate assumes that fewer than 5% of tests encounter implementation defects.

• This estimate assumes that no more than four firmware updates are required for the device being tested beyond the initial product delivery.

• This estimate assumes no more than four remote sessions with lab personnel, including troubleshooting, setup, or consultation.

• The estimate assumes prompt responses to inquiries from lab personnel regarding the setup and operation of the device.

Does the BTL Lab offer discounts? 

Corporate Members of BACnet International receive a 50% discount on the hourly testing rate when using the BTL Lab. Corporate Members also receive at least one included annual product listing and discounts on additional annual listings (varies by membership tier).

What documentation is required to test my device? 

BTL Functionality Checklist, BTL Testing Application, EPICS, and Special Instructions.

What should be sent to the lab for BTL Testing? 

The device, Special Instructions, and EPICS.

What steps must be completed before BTL testing can begin?  

• A fully developed product 

• Pre-testing 

• A completed BTL Functionality Checklist, BTL Lab Testing Application, EPICS, and Special Instructions document  

How does the BTL Lab schedule devices to be tested? 

• The BTL Lab schedules devices based on a testing queue determined by the submission date of the BTL Lab Testing Application. 

What happens if issues are found during testing? 

The BTL Lab will provide regular status updates that include any issues identified during testing. Once the issues have been corrected through updated firmware, the BTL Lab will perform any necessary retesting to ensure the issues have been resolved.

If I have multiple similar models, how do they get tested?  

As described in the BTL Testing Policy, differential testing can be performed on multiple models with similar BACnet functionality. Each tested model will be documented in the test report.
