The Testing Process

The workflow below describes the BTL Lab testing process and the communication that you will have with the BTL Lab during the actual testing of your device.  This workflow also shows the documentation required prior to testing, steps that the BTL Lab implements during the testing process, and how the BTL Lab will require firmware updates if any issues are found during testing.

Step 1: BTL Lab Application Submission

To begin the BTL Lab Testing process, you must complete and submit the BTL Lab Testing Application form. The BTL Functionality Checklist and BTL Testing Application will determine which tests will be conducted. Once your BTL Testing Application has been completed and submitted, the BTL Lab will send a formal BTL Lab Testing Application Acceptance Letter. This letter will include an official estimate of the required tests, test hours, testing costs, and the approximate testing start date.

Step 2: Pre-Testing Preparation

Before submitting your product for BTL Lab Testing, you should complete your own internal testing. This internal testing is strongly encouraged because it helps reduce issues that could result in additional testing costs. Once the BTL Lab finalizes the estimate, we will also provide a list of required tests to assist you with your pretesting efforts. This information will be included with your BTL Lab Testing Application Acceptance Letter.

Step 3: Supporting documentation for the BTL Lab

The additional BTL Lab Testing documentation includes the following documents: Sample Proforma Invoice Document a. The Proforma Invoice acts as a shipping manifest template detailing the items being shipped and must be completed in accordance with customs regulations before shipment. For BTL Lab-specific information, please refer to the Sample Proforma Invoice Document. EPICS Example File a. The EPICS file outlines your product's capabilities. IUT Special Instructions a. The IUT Special Test Instructions offer configuration guidelines essential for testing.

Step 4: Testing

BTL Lab Testing will not begin until all administrative requirements are finalized. Ensure your corporate profile satisfies one (1) of the following criteria: BACnet International Membership: Corporate members must be in good financial standing. The BTL Testing Application fee will be waived for those who have previously tested with the BTL Lab. Please refer to the Fees tab for further details. BACnet International Non-Members: Upfront payment of the BTL Lab Testing Application Fee + 50% of the total estimated BTL Lab testing hours is required. Please refer to the Fees tab for further details. Learn more about membership by contacting David Nardone, BACnet International's Director of Membership and Education.

Step 5: Completion and BTL Certification

Upon completion of testing, you will receive a preliminary test report, followed by your signed Final Test Report and validated Functionality Checklist. These documents will be required for your final BTL Certification Application. The BTL Certification application link will be sent to you with your Final Test Report.

Step 6: Invoice of Testing Costs

Once testing is complete, you will receive an invoice for the actual testing costs.
